RS #5 Dorcas’ Prayer

Dorcas’ Prayer premiered at Black Choreographer’s Festival February 2017.

Dorcas’ Prayer is a prayer to the deep feminine embodied in the biblical Dorcas of Joppa, the elder Dorcas who was enslaved on St. Simon’s Island in Georgia, and the young Dorcas sold from St. Simon’s Island to a cotton plantation in South Carolina. The piece is about her westward journey through time, the last 2,000 years, in search of final rest in the arms of her mother the Pacific Ocean. The piece asks the audience to find her “in-between,” in the “frozen statue,” “beneath the word.”
